Steven,
For me, healthy aging is all about balance: balancing your body and balancing your diet. Follow these tips to help you stay strong, steady, and independent.
Balance your body: Falls are one of our biggest health risks as we age, but you can lower that risk with just a few minutes of practice a day. Regular balance exercises train the muscles and nerves that help you stay stable on your feet.
Two of my favorite balancing moves are:
↔️
Weight shifts, Stand with your feet hip-width apart and shift your weight from your left foot to your right foot, swaying side-to-side. You can also do this seated by sitting tall and slowly leaning left to right.
????
Single-leg balance, Grab a chair if you need extra support. Lift one foot and hold it for 10 seconds. Then, switch sides.
Balance your diet: MyPlate.gov is a great tool to plan your meals based on your dietary needs. Why not start with a Creamy Squash Soup With Shredded Apples for a balanced, seasonal meal featuring my fall favorites? It’s versatile, so you can add different lean proteins to it, like chicken or pork loin.

As always, talk with your doctor if you have any questions about your balance. And remember, Medicare covers physical therapy and occupational therapy when ordered by your doctor to help you stay steady on your feet.
Here’s to living your healthiest life — no matter your age!
Stay well,
Dr. Oz
